Tools to Make Home Improvement Easier & Toys to Make Life More Fun
I got a response from Zoho in regards to my post – Google Spreadsheets Verses Zoho Sheet. I forwarded them a screen shot of what I was seeing and the spreadsheet that I uploaded. We will see how that plays out.
I also got a response from David Lee from a company called EditGrid. David invited me to check out their spreadsheet application so I decided to give it a whirl.
To start off EditGrid is the only online spreadsheet program that allows you to this -
Embed a spreadsheet in your page – that rocks!
I signed up for an account which interestingly did not ask for my email address. You would think they would want that – doesn’t everyone these days? So their was no confirmation to make sure that I was who I said I was. I wonder what happens if I forget my username or password? Note: After looking for the Post to Blog feature I found where you can enter your e-mail address to recover your account info.
After signing up I was presented with the usually grid of a spreadsheet. The first thing that I wanted to do was import that same spreadsheet that caused issues over at Zoho. Unfortunately it took some work to figure out where to go to upload a sheet. Finally after clicking several tabs in the upper right hand corner I clicked on “My Workspace” and had an area to upload a file.
The reason that I did not click on that tab before was because it appeared that I was already in the “My Workspace” area since that is what was highlighted when I saw the initial grid. Not the best design. I think this would through a lot of people for a loop.
Anyway, the upload of my file went smooth and I was presented with my spreadsheet. The difference with EditGrid compared to Google and Zoho is that it preserved all of my formating and formulas perfectly. In Google my currency formating got messed up so I had to reformat in in Google. In Zoho some on my formulas and formatting would not carry over.
Moving around the sheet and changing things worked nicely. Also, when right clicking on a cell you get a menu that allows you to insert rows and cut/copy/paste – this is nice.
Speed wise EditGrid is as fast if not faster then Google. Zoho is the slowest of the bunch.
Lastly, another thing that EditGrid has which I did not notice in Google or Zoho is templates for common things such as calendars, lists, and time sheets to name a few. Nice
All-in-all EditGrid seems like a pretty solid app. They have a lot of cool features that are not available in Google and Zoho. Their only issue is layout – not layout of the spreadsheets themselves – layout of the features that are available. I did not find the “Post to Blog” feature until going to their blog. They need to make people aware of how to get to the features that set them apart.
P.S. They do have an option to have an editable spreadsheet embedded in your page and I tried it, but it broke my theme. I was able to get that snapshot going though.
Thanks so much for your comments on EditGrid! After reading your comments on layout of features, we push faster the development of the menu bar.
We’ve just released public beta 7 with the menu bar, tagging and some other features. You may like to try that out.
Thanks!
David,
Thanks for the update. I will definately check it out and post my feedback.
