Round Rock Spared from Flooding

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

rain3It has rained everyday for the last week here in Central Texas. Over the last few days that rain has quadrupled with flooding happening all over the Austin area. The areas that were hit the hardest are the Marble Falls and Georgetown areas. Here in Round Rock I have not seen any flooding but the few low water crossings that are here have been closed.

This is definitely the worst set of storms that I have experienced in the last year and a half that we have been here. Last night it seemed that there was a cloud that was just parked right over our house that was dumping inches of rain an hour on us. Thankfully our neighborhood is at the top of a hill so nobody around us had any issues.

I have to say that I am still glad that I moved here instead of living in California. I will take this kind of weather over an earthquake any day.

A Table Saw that is the World’s Safest

World’s Safest Table SawMy Grandfather has been wood working for almost 80 years (Really! He is 95 and was in high school when he started) and I learned the majority of what I know from him. One of his biggest things when working with wood is safety.

I had told my Grandfather of my plan of getting a radial arm saw to use instead on my chop saw and table saw and he advised against it. He told of many occasions where the radial arm saw that he has would grab a piece of wood and throw it across the room. One time he was cutting a 2 x 4 and it went though the wall. He said that even though the blade of the table saw is mostly exposed it was still better then the radial arm saw.

I kept my chop and tables saws.

A couple of months ago I was ripping 2 x 4’s for the banisters for my deck railing and the guard on my table saw got caught up in the blade - it was kind of scary. It was a reminder that even though you try to be as safe as possible accidents can happen. I had thought that it would be nice if they could come up with a table saw that was more safe then one with the blade just sticking up.

I was cruising the internet this past weekend and came across a company that has built the world’s safest table saw. (more…)

New Title - New Theme for Blog

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Well as you can tell things kind of stalled out a little while ago on this blog. I was really hot and heavy talking about anything and everything under the sun. While that can be cool everyone comes to that point in their life where they have to have some definition to their lives.

That time has come to this blog.

From here on out I will be concentrating more on the world of Home Improvement as that seems to be a very big part of my life. Expect to see tips and tricks that I have learned that make my job as the handy man on th house easier.

Don’t worry though - it won’t be all work - there will be some play in there also. After all, I am still very much into “toys” and must have a place to share them with others ;-) .

So look for some more focused blogging here in the future on items that will make your life easier and more enjoyable :-) .
