Time to go Back to School and get that Degree

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

When I was younger I thought that I wanted to get into the “Computer Field” so I enrolled in an MCSE program and went and got a job doing network engineering. A couple of years doing that I was through. I then went in to web design and was on my way to becoming a web developer when I landed in my present position as a Product Manager.

At first I was not to keen on it but now that I have been in the position a while I am really liking it. Instead of having to figure out how to make something from a list of requirements I am guy writing the requirements. With that I am feeling the urge to go back to school to solidify myself in this field and turn it into a career. (more…)

Fantasy Football Season Hits

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

I have never been around so many people that are hyped up about football, but this is Texas. Anyway, the big thing going around the office is all the fantasy football jargon about who is where.

While I am too late to get in on the action here at the office affl.com has a Fantasy Football league that I can join for cash and prizes.

Maybe it’s not too late for me after all.

Blogging from Schlotzsky’s Deli

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

As you can imagine when you move to one region to another their are going to be differences from one are to another - especially when those two areas are separated by 1500 miles.

One of the main differences between Los Angeles and Austin (other then the traffic and the people) is the food. I have long been a fan of Rudy’s BBQ and eat there on almost a weekly basis.

Today I decided to try something different - Schlotzsky’s Deli. It is similar to Quizno’s except for the fact that they make their bread fresh daily (not like how subway does it with frozen dough). The other thing that is cool about Schlotzsky’s is that they have 2 free Mac’s available that you can surf the internet from (I am blogging from one right now). You can also bring your laptop to surf free internet to.

I have to say that it is nice to see companies finally realizing the pull that the internet has on people. See I am not a big deli sandwich type of guy but Schlotzsky’s has just been added to the list because of the internet access.

10 Free Business Cards from Moo

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Moo.com is offering 10 free “cards” that are made from your Flickr album.

The most obvious reason fro getting these is for business cards. I was going to make some for my Round Rock Web Design company but all the pictures I have online are of my family and house - not very compelling for business.

Anyway, if you have the need and the pics up on Flickr it is a good deal.

On the Hunt for a New Digital SLR

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

About a year ago I bought a Sony DSC-H1 which is a higher level camera that gives the ability to do manual adjustments such as aperture, shutter, and other adjustments that let you really want to get the affects that you want.

While that is cool the main reason that I wanted a new camera was that my other camera was just so sssslllllooowwwwww. Literally it was at least 1 second between the time that you pressed the button to the time that the camera would actually take the picture. This was not working very well with a little 1 year old running around. I was taking terrible pictures.

So I bought an open boxed DSC-H1 for around $300. Good deal for the camera.

Staying Organized with Google Calendar

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

I have tried several different calendar programs/gadgets/organizers and none of them have been as easy and useful as Google Calendar.

The reason for the failure of the others and the success of Google for me is that I am not the type of person that can look at a calendar in the morning and remember what to do for the rest of the day. I need something that is in my face about 15 minutes before I need to do something that is time sensitive.

This is where Google Calendar rocks.

The function of Google’s calendar that work the best for me is the reminder function. I have mine set to send me an e-mail and to SMS my cell phone also. Therefore no matter where I am I can get the reminder I need. Then if it something that I cannot get to right away I just leave the e-mail in my email inbox as unread until it is done.

That coupled with my little check register program that I designed have saved me a lot of time and money.

Hercules Hooks - The Easy Way to Hang Things on Your Wall

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

The the As Seen on TV folks have come out with their latest goodie which I think is really cool - Hercules Hook.

What they are is little pin type of hooks that you twist and then push into the wall - no hammer needed. Then you can hang anything you want on the wall up to 150lbs.

The thing that I like about them is that they seem to blend into the wall really well as opposed to nails that can really be eye sores.

You can get them at amazon.com.

I Caved in and Bought Battlefield 2

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

It had been 3 months since I had played Battlefield 2 when I found myself wandering into a local LAN games spot.

I sat down skeptical that it was going to be the old Battlefield 2 that I knew that was fun and non-buggy. My skepticism was melted away as I spent the next hour blowing away people in helicopters and tanks.

So I caved.

I went this past weekend and bought the game for myself (I had been using my brother-in-laws copy previously). I know, 2142 is coming out within the next month but I am not interested at this point. From the people I have talked to it is not that great. Besides I just found out about the POE mod for it and am now playing that. It should keep my occupied for the next 6 months or so.

Does anyone even play 1942 anymore?

It’s That Season - Time for Halloween Decorating

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

So from one day to the next here in Austin it went from 100+ degrees down to 85. That can only mean one thing - fall is here. And with fall Halloween.

So in order to scary off as many greedy little kids you should stock up on as many Halloween decorations as possible.

When I was a kid my parents had a couple a tomb stones that they would place in the front yard with one of them reading - “reserved for the nest greedy kid”. Then they would answer the door dressed like Dracula and try to scary the kids away.

Crazy.
