What the laser battle set is are 2 of the Air Hogs Havoc Heli’s with infared lasers attached to the front that you can dog fight with. When one Havoc Heli shoots and “hits” the one the engine cuts and the heli spins out of control.

These babies are really fun. How do I know? I have a set! I just got them today and they are really fun. They fly as well if not better then the original Havoc Heli from Air Hogs but have a slightly different body.

The reason for my rant? A patch for Battlefield 2 no doubt.

This time the rant involves having to download a 500+mb patch to go from version 1.4 to 1.41. The caption of the patch is “updates any version to 1.41″.

Gee thanks EA for again making things 10 times more difficult then it needs to be.

I swear EA Games must be owned by Microsoft.

I sat down skeptical that it was going to be the old Battlefield 2 that I knew that was fun and non-buggy. My skepticism was melted away as I spent the next hour blowing away people in helicopters and tanks.

So I caved.

I went this past weekend and bought the game for myself (I had been using my brother-in-laws copy previously). I know, 2142 is coming out within the next month but I am not interested at this point. From the people I have talked to it is not that great. Besides I just found out about the POE mod for it and am now playing that. It should keep my occupied for the next 6 months or so.

Does anyone even play 1942 anymore?

Well I am almost a month late on this but it seams that EA has released a beta version of their 1.4 Patch.

Unfortunately I think that this is too little to late. From the post of the forum that I saw there are only a few servers that actually have the new 1.4 patch some most people cannot even get on.

I wouldn’t know though. It has been 2+ months since I’ve played and to be honest – I do not miss it.

EA Games finally came out with a Community Update that semi addressed the issues that people are having -

We recognize that this has been a very trying time for everyone who enjoys Battlefield 2 and are putting forth every effort to improve upon the issues that are causing some players frustration. The DICE team has been reviewing player feedback gathered from forums, email, and the ranker server providers in an effort to provide the best possible step forward from 1.3. While this work has been highly focused on bug fixing the team has also managed to put some work toward new content.

The funny part about the above is the “causing some players frustration” statement. Some? How about total frustration. The EA forum lit up after this latest post with people continuing to trash EA for their lack of support.

Further down their post they mentioned that they had identified the causes for server performance issues and the crashes to desktops. Unfortunately the are not going to release these fixes until they implement some “enhancements” to the product.

Please EA, no more enhancements, we do not need the whole world coming to a screeching halt.

As a recap, the 1.3 update rendered the majority of paying customers in capable of playing Battlefield 2 online. The reason was terrible server performance resulting in a lot of lag. Because of the inability to play online I decided to explorer the single player portion of the game.

I had found a cool web site that several single player maps to download and install to make single player play bearable.

Well it seems that the 1.3 patch also affected single player play also. The game would crash to the desktop upon launching the map or within 5 minutes of play – wonderful.

Therefore, in my “play time” I reformatted my hard drive and played with Windows Vista Beta 2 for a while. I could not get a driver for my wireless adapter so I also did a fresh install of XP. I did not reinstall BF2.

In fact, I will not be reinstalling BF2 or purchasing the new Armored Fury Expansion Pack that is out (even though the new copters look cool ). In fact I decided that I am not even going to purchase Battlefield 2142 when it comes out.

I have decided that I am not going to subject myself or waste my money on a company how does crappy work. My game worked fine before their little update. My computer exceeds their “minimum requirements” for proper gameplay yet because they want to rush out an update to get an expansion pack out I cannot play the game – at all (You must have the 1.3 update to play the new expansion pack).

To some it up – EA sucks and will not be purchasing another PC game from you – burn me once shame on you – burn me twice – shame on me.

If anything I will be looking into an Xbox sometime in the future. And yes, I know that EA makes games for Xbox and yes, I will probably purchase an Xbox version game from them. Why? Because they won’t be able to screw the game up with a stupid “Update”.

Battlefield 2 – The Pwned Life

NP I saw as I go to the EA web site and download the incremental patch. I few minutes later I am installed and booting into the game.

The first thing I notice is that it is taking a long time for the server list to update. Then, one it is done my pings for every server are high – way high, about 2-3 times higher then usual.

Not thinking that this is such a big deal I choose a server and the map begins to load. After I spawn I immediately notice the intense lag – lag that is so bad the game is not playable. I check another server or 2 and the same thing.

I then startup a single player game and it crashes to the desktop within 5 minutes. Lovely.

This patch was released on 4.25.06 and it is now 6.6.06. it has been almost 2 weeks that I have not been able to play the game because EA biffed the patch. The only word from them is -

That is really weak. Basically they are saying – Whoops! We really screwed up but we do not know how to fix it right now so please be patient and do not play the game that you paid $50 for. Nice.
